HaemO2 is a synthetic biology project from the Essex University aiming to develop a third generation artificial blood substitute that can be used for high risk patients and in high stress environments.


Inspiralis supplies high quality topoisomerase research products to both the pharmaceutical industry and academia, aimed at enhancing research into the hugely important anti-infectives and anti-cancer markets.  Inspiralis was founded as a PBL/JIC spin-out in 2006.

Intelligent Fingerprinting

Intelligent Fingerprinting, which was spun-out of the School of Chemistry at UEA in 2007, has developed a revolutionary approach to drug screening using fingerprints that is non-invasive, fast and cost-effective.

Novacta Biosystems

Novacta is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company discovering, developing and commercialising innovative drugs for the treatment of bacterial infections, especially those caused by drug resistant bacteria.  It was founded in 2000 as a PBL/JIC spin-out.

Procarta Biosystems

Procarta was formed as a PBL/JIC spin-out in 2007 to develop novel antibacterials through an adaptable DNA-based platform.  The company’s aim is to counter one of the greatest unmet challengse in the clinic - the rise of drug-resistant bacterial strains.

Spectral Edge

Spectral Edge was founded in 2011 and is a spin-out from the School of Computing Sciences at UEA.  Spectral Edge has pioneered new approaches to image fusion, colour perception-based processing and image enhancement.


Established in 2004, Syrinix is a spin-out of innovative technology developed by UEA’s School of Computing Sciences. The company is leading the way in trunk water-main leak detection, helping major water companies intervene successfully to prevent failure of pipes and subsequent loss of water.


UltraSoc was formed in 2005 as a joint spin-out from the Universities of Essex and Kent.  The company’s debug technology accelerates the development and improves the performance of software for systems-on-chip (SoC).
